Oberhof was already an established winter resort by the early 1920s, and the municipality's decision to issue emergency currency — Notgeld — in 1922 reflected the hyperinflationary collapse of the Reichsmark rather than any local financial crisis. By that point, thousands of German municipalities were doing the same. What distinguishes Oberhof's issue is Meisenbach Riffarth & Co., a Leipzig firm with a strong reputation in color lithography, whose work on this series is noticeably above the average quality of provincial Notgeld.

The 80 Pfennig denomination is an odd figure — most Notgeld series favored round values — suggesting this was calibrated to cover a specific local fare or fee.
