This note emerged from one of the more awkward transitional moments in Hungarian monetary history. The pengő was introduced in 1927 to replace the korona at a rate of 12,500 korona to 1 pengő, but the new currency's infrastructure — including adequate note stocks — wasn't ready at the precise moment the switchover demanded. These provisional issues filled the gap, denominations calculated and overprinted to bridge the two systems rather than represent any organic monetary unit. Eighty pengő is not a denomination that arose from economic convention.
Magyar Pénzjegynyomda had been printing Hungarian currency domestically since 1923, a deliberate policy shift away from foreign printers following postwar political sensitivities.
