80 Heller Sitzenberg

Sitzenberg is a small Lower Austrian municipality, and like hundreds of similar communities, it issued Notgeld during the postwar economic breakdown when small change effectively vanished from circulation. The 80 Heller denomination is an odd one — most Austrian municipal issues clustered around rounder values, and the choice of 80 suggests a specific local pricing or exchange need rather than administrative convention.

E.F. Hofecker designed a number of Lower Austrian Notgeld issues during this period, bringing a consistent graphic sensibility to what were otherwise purely functional emergency instruments.
