Opmerkingen

Melk's 80 Heller Notgeld sits in an awkward denomination — not a round figure, not a natural division of the Krone, and clearly the product of a municipal cashier working out what gap needed filling rather than any coherent monetary plan. Austrian Notgeld of this period was issued in a flood between 1920 and 1922 as the postwar Krone collapsed and small change vanished entirely from circulation; hundreds of municipalities printed their own, Melk among them.

Hermes, operating out of Vienna's 17th district, handled a significant volume of provincial Notgeld work during this period. Walter Prinzl's involvement as designer is the detail that lifts this above anonymous jobbing print work.
