One of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues produced during the hyperinflationary chaos following the collapse of the Habsburg economy, this 80 Heller note was printed locally in Kirchberg am Wagram — a small market town on the Danube plain northwest of Vienna. Municipal and district authorities across Austria resorted to issuing their own emergency scrip from 1919 onward simply because small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted down.
The designer Broinger is otherwise poorly documented in the Notgeld literature. Local production means print quality varied considerably across the run.
