Obverse description The obverse is printed in blue and brown on cream paper, framed by an ornate guilloche border with circular denomination medallions reading '80' at each corner. A central brown-ink vignette presents a detailed line-art view of Hotel FM. Radetzky set against a wooded hillside. Above the vignette, the title 'KASSENSCHEIN' appears in bold letterpress within a decorative panel dated '1920', flanked by the issuing authority legend 'DER GEMEINDE HINTERBRÜHL BEI WIEN' and the value inscription 'ÜBER ACHTZIG HELLER'. Three manuscript signatures of municipal officials — Vize-Bürgermeister, Bürgermeister, and Finanz-Referent — appear below the vignette, with a further text panel to the right carrying the authorising municipality details.

Comments

Hinterbrühl is a small village south of Vienna in the Baden district, best known for the Seegrotte — a flooded anhydrite mine that the Nazis would later use as an underground aircraft factory. In 1920, that was still in the future; the immediate problem was a catastrophic shortage of small-denomination coinage across what remained of Austria after the dissolution of the empire. Thousands of Austrian municipalities printed their own Notgeld to fill the gap, and Hinterbrühl was among them.

Wehhofers Erben in nearby Mödling handled the printing — a local solution to a local problem, which is characteristic of Lower Austrian Notgeld from this period.
