Grossraming is a small market town in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency paper money — Notgeld — to address a crippling coin shortage that persisted well after the armistice. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left local economies scrambling, and municipal authorities were legally permitted to issue small-denomination notes to keep trade moving at the village level.
The 80 Heller denomination is slightly unusual; most Austrian municipal Notgeld clustered around 10, 20, and 50 Heller values. An 80 Heller piece suggests deliberate local pricing needs rather than a standard series.
