Eidenberg is a small rural commune in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized municipalities, it issued its own emergency small change during the postwar Heller shortage. The Austrian state's inability to produce sufficient coin after 1918 pushed this responsibility onto local governments — the result was thousands of distinct Notgeld issues, many printed on whatever stock was locally available.
The 80 Heller denomination is among the more unusual face values of the Austrian municipal series, reflecting purely local calculation of what denominations were actually needed in daily trade rather than any standardized national approach.
