80 Heller

Freinberg is a small village in Upper Austria, near the German border at Passau, and this 80 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued between 1920 and 1922 — emergency municipal scrip produced because small-denomination coins had effectively vanished from circulation after the collapse of the Habsburg economy. Hundreds of Austrian communes issued their own, often producing elaborately printed series aimed partly at collectors even at the time of issue.

Albrecht serving as both printer and designer is characteristic of smaller provincial commissions, where a single regional firm handled the entire production. J. Neulinger's signature as municipal authority would have been the Bürgermeister or a designated financial officer of the Gemeinde.
