The Guaraní monetary system was established in 1943 to replace the peso, but Paraguay's silver commemorative program is a relatively recent development driven largely by export demand from European collector markets rather than domestic circulation. Carlos Pedretti is a Paraguayan sculptor best known for monumental public works, and coins in his honor are uncommon subjects for national mints — most commemorative programs favor political figures or independence anniversaries.
