The 80-ducat pieces of Sigismund III were not circulating currency — they were donatives, presentation medals struck in coin form for distribution at court ceremonies, diplomatic missions, and royal gifts. This particular issue from Bydgoszcz in 1621 falls squarely within the Ottoman crisis years, when the Commonwealth was marshalling resources ahead of the catastrophic Battle of Khotyn. Whether any of these pieces traveled east as diplomatic instruments or remained within court circles is unrecorded.
Kop. 1443 documents this as one of the largest Polish gold multiples of the reign. Surviving examples are known in single digits.
