The denomination itself is the story. Eighty baht has no place in Thailand's normal monetary system — this note was struck specifically because Queen Sirikit turned 80 in 2012, and the Thai royal commemorative tradition demands exact numerical alignment between the honoree's age and the face value. The Canadian Bank Note Company in Ottawa has handled several of these Thai royal commemoratives, a relationship that goes back decades and persists partly because CBNC's intaglio work meets the exacting standards the Thai court expects for such issues.
Circulation was nominal. These were distributed through the Bank of Thailand in sealed folders and absorbed almost entirely by collectors and gift-givers before reaching any till.
