Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse features a high-relief representation of the celebrated Romanesque enthroned statue of Saint James the Apostle (Santiago), as found in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, depicted in flowing robes and seated in a frontal pose with attributes of his pilgrimage. To the left of the figure, a circular medallion displays a stylised radiant cross or star motif, symbolising the Holy Year of Compostela. The denomination 80000 PTAS is inscribed in two lines in the lower left field, with the crowned Madrid mint mark (M) positioned immediately below. The arc legend AÑO JUBILAR COMPOSTELANO curves along the left and upper periphery of the coin, framing the composition in Latin-script lettering.

Aanvullende informatie

The Holy Jacobean Year — Año Santo Compostelano — occurs whenever the feast of Saint James falls on a Sunday, a calendrical coincidence that draws millions of pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela along the Camino. 1999 was such a year, and the Spanish state issued this coin as part of a broader commemorative program tied directly to that designation. The Vatican grants plenary indulgences to pilgrims completing the Camino during these years, a privilege dating to the papal bull Regis Aeterni of 1122.

The 27-gram gold format at this fineness placed the coin firmly outside circulation from the outset — a collector issue with no pretense otherwise.
