Obverse description Unadorned effigy of King Juan Carlos I facing slightly left, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and facial features in a contemporary portrait style. The bust is centrally placed within the field, truncated at the shoulder, with the monarch depicted in civilian dress. The circumferential legend reads JUAN CARLOS I REY DE ESPAÑA along the upper arc, with the date 1999 prominently positioned at the base of the design. Two decorative scallop shell ornaments flank the date on either side, referencing the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage tradition. The overall design is restrained and dignified, characteristic of late-twentieth-century Spanish commemorative coinage.
Obverse script Latin

Reverse description The reverse features a high-relief representation of the celebrated Romanesque enthroned statue of Saint James the Apostle (Santiago), as found in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, depicted in flowing robes and seated in a frontal pose with attributes of his pilgrimage. To the left of the figure, a circular medallion displays a stylised radiant cross or star motif, symbolising the Holy Year of Compostela. The denomination 80000 PTAS is inscribed in two lines in the lower left field, with the crowned Madrid mint mark (M) positioned immediately below. The arc legend AÑO JUBILAR COMPOSTELANO curves along the left and upper periphery of the coin, framing the composition in Latin-script lettering.
