This issue belongs to a commemorative series honoring the fifth centenary of the discovery of America, a program the Spanish government launched in the late 1980s to run through 1992. The five-hundredth anniversary drove an unusually ambitious minting schedule across multiple denominations and compositions, with the 80,000 peseta gold pieces sitting at the top of the face-value ladder for the series.
Charles V ruled a Habsburg empire that included the territories Columbus had opened, making him a logical choice for inclusion. His reign saw the most aggressive phase of New World extraction — the silver flows from Potosí would later destabilize European monetary systems for a century.
