| Additional information |
This piece was struck to commemorate the fifth centenary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, a series the Real Casa de la Moneda produced across multiple denominations and years throughout the early 1990s. Spain invested heavily in the quincentenary — hosting the 1992 Seville Expo and the Barcelona Olympics simultaneously — and the commemorative coinage program was partly designed to capitalize on international collector interest surrounding both events.
The Schön 137.2 suffix distinguishes this from earlier strikings in the same series with differing reverse details.
