Jülich was besieged in 1610 by a combined Dutch-Brandenburg force following the disputed succession to the Jülich-Cleves territories, one of the more combustible inheritance crises of the Thirty Years' War's prelude. The city's commander authorized emergency coinage struck from whatever silver could be gathered — plate, church vessels, bullion — producing pieces of irregular manufacture that bear no pretense of normal mint production.
The 8 Thaler denomination is exceptionally heavy for siege currency, suggesting the city still held meaningful silver reserves at the time of striking. Jülich surrendered in September 1610 after a siege of roughly three months.
