Antonio Manoel de Vilhena's tenure as Grand Master (1722–1736) coincided with a period of aggressive fortification on Malta — his name is most visibly preserved in Fort Manoel, completed in 1723, the same year these coins were being struck. The Order's monetary issues under Vilhena are notably complex: Restelli catalogues at least three distinct varieties for this type alone, differentiated by die details that reflect the inconsistencies of the Order's Valletta mint rather than any deliberate policy change.
Vilhena was Portuguese by birth, one of very few Grand Masters drawn from the Iberian tongue rather than the French or Italian langues that dominated the Order's hierarchy.
