The numeral '8' and a value indicator flank the saint's figure on either side, dividing the denomination. Between his feet appears the Oversticht coat of arms. Deventer's 8 Stivers coinage of 1618 belongs to a period when the city retained meaningful monetary autonomy under the loose federal structure of the Dutch Republic. The Generality had been pushing since the Union of Utrecht for greater standardization of provincial and civic coinage, a process the inland Overijssel cities resisted longer than most coastal counterparts. The .500 fineness reflects a compromise between the cost of silver procurement and the expectations of regional commerce along the IJssel trade corridor.
