Frederik II's reign saw persistent pressure on the Danish silver coinage, partly driven by the costs of the Northern Seven Years' War (ended 1570) and the subsequent rebuilding of the royal fleet and Frederiksborg Castle itself — the very institution that gave this mint its name. The Frederiksborg mint operated as a secondary facility, and output attributable specifically to it within this type is considerably rarer than contemporary Copenhagen production.
The .614 fineness places this issue within a broader Scandinavian trend of gradual debasement across the mid-sixteenth century, a process well documented in Danish monetary ordinances of the 1570s and 1580s.
