James VI's third coinage of 1581 introduced a new denomination structure that effectively abandoned the traditional Scottish monetary reckoning in favor of a more rationalized system — a financial reform pushed through while the king was still a teenager nominally ruling under the regency apparatus that had governed Scotland since his mother Mary's abdication in 1567.
