Bolivia's 8 scudo gold coinage of this period was struck at the Potosí mint, operating on silver-rich revenues that had already peaked centuries earlier. By the 1850s the mint was handling gold largely as a prestige exercise — Potosí's identity was bound to silver, and gold denominations of this size circulated primarily among merchants and in international settlement rather than in domestic trade.
