Costa Rica gained independence from the Central American Federation in 1838 but lacked the mint infrastructure to produce its own coinage at scale. The solution was pragmatic: foreign silver — primarily Spanish colonial 8 reales — was countermarked to legitimize it as domestic currency. The Type I punch, applied in 1841–42, is distinguished from the later Type II by a small but consistent difference in the dies used for the horse-and-sun countermark.
Authenticating the host coin matters as much as the countermark itself. Specimens on Potosí or Mexico City 8 reales are most frequently encountered.
