| Opis awersu | The obverse displays the crowned Royal Arms of Castile and León, struck on an earlier Spanish colonial macuquina (cob) planchet dated 1732 from the Mexico City Mint. The quartered shield bears the castles of Castile and the lions of León, with the pomegranate of Granada in base and the French fleur-de-lis in the center escutcheon, all surmounted by a royal crown. The mint mark 'M' and assayer initial 'F' appear to the left of the shield, while the denomination '8' is visible to the right. A partial circular legend surrounds the design within a beaded inner border, and a small circular Guatemalan countermark — applied in 1838 — is visible punched into the field to the left of the shield. |
