Issued during the British siege of Cartagena de Indias in 1741 — the largest amphibious assault in history until Normandy, involving over 186 ships and 23,000 men under Admiral Vernon — Cuban colonial authorities struck emergency copper coinage to sustain local commerce while silver was hoarded or withheld. The siege ultimately failed, but the fiscal disruption it caused across Spanish Caribbean holdings was immediate and severe.
Copper was an unconventional choice for an 8 reales denomination, and the pieces were never intended as permanent currency. Few survived extended circulation.
