8 Reales Provisional Coinage

Peru's first republican coinage, issued before Lima's mint was fully secured from royalist forces, these provisionals were struck at Lima under chaotic conditions in the immediate aftermath of independence — San Martín had proclaimed independence in July 1821, but the war was far from over. The royalists still held the Real Felipe fortress at Callao, and the political situation was unstable enough that the new republic was essentially improvising its monetary infrastructure in real time.

The series is notable for significant die crudeness and striking inconsistencies, not as a generic observation but because Lima's skilled mint workers had largely fled or refused to cooperate with the new administration.
