| Descrizione del rovescio | The early national arms of the Provincias del Rio de la Plata displayed within an oval cartouche at the centre of the field: the upper half bears a rising sun over a horizontal ground, with a Phrygian cap on a staff in the upper portion, while the lower half shows two clasped hands above a crossed fasces. The shield is encircled by a laurel and olive wreath, with two crossed laurel branches at the base. The denomination numeral 8 appears to the left of the shield and the letter R to the right. The circular legend EN UNION Y LIBERTAD runs along the upper periphery, with the mint mark PTS, assayer initial F, date 1815, and denomination 8 R disposed around the lower margin. |

The Provincias del Río de la Plata declared independence in July 1816, but this coin precedes that moment — struck at Potosí in 1815 while the revolutionary government still nominally operated under the fiction of Ferdinand VII's sovereignty. The shift to issuing coinage in the name of the Provincias rather than the Spanish crown was itself a political act, one the royalist forces still occupying parts of the region could not ignore.
Potosí would change hands multiple times during the independence wars, and dies prepared in one political moment were sometimes used under entirely different authority.
