| Description du revers | Central device features the early Argentine national arms: an oval cartouche divided horizontally, with two clasped hands in the lower half holding a pike surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in the upper half, set against a horizontally lined background. The oval shield is encircled by a wreath of laurel and oak branches tied at the base with a ribbon bow. The denomination numerals '8' and 'R' flank the wreath at either side. The circumferential legend EN UNION Y LIBERTAD runs along the upper border, with the mint mark PTS, assayer initial J, and date 1813 distributed in the lower field and exergual area, all separated by pellets. |

The 1813 8 Reales from Potosí represents one of the earliest coinages struck under revolutionary authority in the Río de la Plata, issued just two years after the May Revolution of 1810 deposed the Spanish viceroy. The Potosí mint had operated under Spanish Crown control since 1572, and its capture by patriot forces in 1813 was considered essential — not merely symbolic — because the mountain beneath the city, Cerro Rico, was still the most productive silver source in the hemisphere.
Production was short-lived. Royalist forces retook Potosí later that same year, suspending patriot coinage until 1815.
