The Potosí mint's cob coinage — macuquinas — of the 1650s sits at the center of one of colonial Spanish America's most dramatic scandals. An investigation launched in 1649 revealed that mint officials, assayers, and merchants had been systematically debasing silver shipments for decades, substituting copper-heavy alloy while falsifying assay marks. The fraud implicated the entire administrative apparatus of the mint. By 1652, the Crown had ordered mass executions, stripped offices, and imposed a complete reorganization of production — which is why pieces from this exact window carry revised assayer marks.
Assayer "E" (Ergueta) appears on issues from the post-reform period and is considered more reliable in fineness than anything struck in the years immediately preceding the purge.
