Obverse description Central field displays the Royal Arms of Castile and León, comprising the quartered coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs surmounted by a royal crown. The mint mark P for Potosí and assayer's initial M (for Juan Sánchez Mejía) appear in the field, accompanied by the numeral 8 denoting the coin's value. The legend is rendered in Latin and separated from the central device by a beaded inner circle. The overall strike is characteristic of cob (macuquina) coinage, resulting in an irregular planchet with partially visible design elements.
