Obverse description Central device depicts the Mexican republican eagle displayed with wings spread, perched upon a nopal cactus growing from a rocky outcrop amid water, with a serpent clutched in its beak and talon in the classical manner. The eagle is rendered in high relief with finely engraved feather detail. Flanking the base of the cactus are two sprays, an olive branch to the left and a laurel branch to the right, tied at the bottom. The circular legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA arcs along the upper periphery in Latin capitals, while a continuous beaded border frames the entire design.
