Beschrijving voorzijde Crudely struck hammered flan displaying the two-line legend 'SUD / OAX' in large, bold capital letters occupying the central field, standing for 'Sud de Oaxaca' (South Oaxaca), a designation of the insurgent-controlled southern region. The coarse surfaces and irregular planchet are characteristic of the emergency wartime production methods employed by the Oaxacan insurgent forces during the Mexican War of Independence. A beaded or toothed border runs along the coin's periphery. The field shows significant die wear and surface porosity consistent with improvised minting conditions.

Aanvullende informatie

Oaxaca fell under insurgent control in late 1812 when José María Morelos captured the city, and the provisional mint established there struck necessity coinage to fund the independence movement. By 1814 the royalist reconquest was closing in — General Melchor Múzquiz retook Oaxaca in March of that year — meaning production of this type was sharply curtailed mid-year.

These pieces are characteristically crude, struck on irregular planchets with inconsistent die alignment, not from carelessness but from the conditions of a besieged revolutionary administration operating a mint under active military threat.
