8 Reales Oaxaca - Insurgent Coinage

Morelos captured Oaxaca in November 1812 and immediately pressed its mint into service — one of the few functioning colonial mints the insurgency ever controlled. These pieces were struck under urgent field conditions to pay troops and establish financial credibility for a rebellion that Spain's authorities refused to recognize as anything more than banditry. The die work is often crude, intentionally or otherwise, and attribution between genuine insurgent strikes and contemporary royalist imitations can be genuinely contested among specialists.

KM#234a distinguishes the Morelos-period Oaxaca issues from later provisional types. The assayer marks shift across the short window of insurgent occupation, which ended when royalist forces retook the city in 1814.
