Reverse description The reverse displays the interlaced monogram of Morelos (M) prominently in the upper field, accompanied by the denomination indicator 8. R. and the date 1812, all set within an ornate field of swirling floral and foliate scrollwork. Rosette or quatrefoil ornaments punctuate the design between the alphanumeric elements, lending the composition a distinctive decorative character. The legends and numerals are boldly rendered in a cast technique, consistent with the primitive mint facilities available to the insurgents at Oaxaca. A serrated or radiating border frames the left side of the coin. The overall design conveys the authority of Morelos and the insurgent cause through a combination of monogram, denomination, and date.
