During the Mexican War of Independence, insurgent forces under José María Morelos controlled significant territory in southern Mexico but lacked the infrastructure to mint coinage at scale. Their solution was pragmatic: captured royalist silver — predominantly circulating 8 Reales struck at established colonial mints — was countermarked to assert rebel monetary authority and distinguish acceptable tender within insurgent-held zones. The countermarking operation was crude by necessity, conducted under field conditions between campaigns.
Morelos was captured and executed in December 1815, collapsing the provisional government that authorized these pieces. The window of issue was tight, the surviving population smaller still.
