Felipe V ascended the Spanish throne in 1700 as the first Bourbon king, triggering the War of the Spanish Succession almost immediately. Coinage struck at Seville in 1701 sits at the precise hinge point between Habsburg monetary tradition and the Bourbon administration that would eventually overhaul the entire Spanish minting system. The Seville mint had operated continuously since the 16th century and retained its cob-style production methods well into Felipe's reign before milled coinage gradually displaced them.
The 'Maria' moniker applied to this type refers to the assayer's initial, not any royal dedication.
