Obverse description Central quartered shield bearing the castles of Castile and the rampant lions of León in alternating quarters, surmounted by an ornate royal crown with cross finial. The shield is flanked by the collar and badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The mint marks S and M appear to either side of the shield in the field. The circular legend reads CAROLVS II D G HISPANIA REX, distributed around the periphery within a milled border.

Reverse description Central monogram of the Virgin Mary ("MA") formed by interlaced letters M and A in an ornate design, surmounted by a large patriarchal cross with fleur-de-lis terminals. The denomination mark R 8 appears to either side of the cross shaft, indicating 8 Reales. The circular legend VIRTVTE ET PROTECTIONE, with the date 1700, runs around the periphery punctuated by rosette ornaments, all within a milled border.
