Valladolid — present-day Morelia, in Michoacán — was one of several royalist mints hastily activated during the Mexican Wars of Independence to counter insurgent coinage circulating in rebel-held territories. The 1813 issue came at a particularly unstable moment: Morelos had declared insurgent congress at Chilpancingo that same year, and royalist administrators were under mounting pressure to demonstrate fiscal and political continuity through functioning currency. Production quality at Valladolid was inconsistent throughout its brief operation, and the mint closed before independence was achieved.
