The Durango mint operated under royalist control throughout most of the Mexican War of Independence, functioning as one of the Crown's primary silver-striking facilities in the north while insurgent forces cut off or captured mints elsewhere. Fernando VII never set foot in New Spain — he spent the entire independence period either imprisoned by Napoleon or navigating the constitutional crises of the Peninsular War — yet his effigy continued circulating on coins struck thousands of miles away by a colonial administration fighting to preserve a kingdom he barely governed.

Durango's relative geographic isolation from the main insurgent campaigns in central Mexico allowed it to maintain more consistent output than mints like Zacatecas, which changed hands repeatedly. The KM#111.2 designation distinguishes this issue from the Mexico City and other regional royalist strikings by its distinctive assayer marks.
