Obverse description The crowned royal arms of Spain occupy the central field, displaying the quartered shield with the castles of Castile and lions of León in the traditional arrangement, surmounted by a large ornate royal crown. The denomination numeral 8 appears to the right of the shield, with the assayer initial J to the left. The encircling legend reads FERND·VI·D·G· on the left and HISPAN·ET·IND·REX· on the right, separated by rosette stops, all within a milled border.
