The Santiago mint, established in 1743, was producing macuquina — cob coinage — until the crown mandated a transition to milled coinage in the early 1750s. These Fernando VI 8 reales represent some of the earliest milled silver struck at Santiago, a technically demanding shift that required newly imported machinery and trained personnel, neither of which arrived reliably or on schedule.
The short window of 1751–1758 closes with Fernando VI's death and the accession of Carlos III, whose subsequent monetary reforms would reshape colonial minting priorities. Early Santiago milled coinage of this type is notably scarcer than comparable Lima or Mexico City production from the same reign.
