Obverse description The obverse displays the laureate and draped bust of Carlos IV facing right, executed in the neoclassical portrait style typical of late-colonial Spanish milled coinage. The peripheral legend reads CAROLUS · IIII · DEI · GRATIA with the date 1805 positioned in the lower exergual area. A small oval Philippine countermark — bearing the crowned cypher F·7·o for Ferdinand VII — is applied directly onto the chest of the royal effigy, authenticating the coin for circulation in the Philippines during 1832–1834. The rim is bordered by a continuous toothed or milled edge. The overall strike quality reflects the high standard of the Mexican Mint's milled production of the period.
