The countermark was applied by Spanish colonial authorities in the Philippines to validate foreign silver for local circulation. Portions of the underlying host coin's legend and design elements remain partially visible in the field around the countermark. The serrated border of the applied stamp is well defined, characteristic of the Type I countermark series issued under the authority of Ferdinand VII. |
