Obverse description The obverse displays the Sumenep countermark applied to the host cob coin, consisting of a rectangular incuse stamp bearing Arabic or Javanese script characters arranged in two registers, surmounted by a decorative crown or floral device. The countermark is deeply struck into the irregular silver flan, partially overlapping the underlying Spanish colonial design. A small plug or repair mark is visible to the right of the countermark. The surrounding field retains the characteristically rough, uneven surface typical of hammered cob coinage.
