Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Royal Arms of Spain — a quartered shield bearing castles (Castile) and lions (León) in the first and fourth quarters, with the arms of Aragon (vertical bars) in the second and third quarters, and a small central escutcheon bearing the Bourbon fleur-de-lis of Granada at the base. The shield is surmounted by the elaborate Royal Crown. To the left of the shield appear the assayer's initials 'MF' and to the right the denomination '8', all within a beaded inner border. The surrounding legend reads 'PHILIPPVS V' with 'DEI GRATIA' partially visible, accompanied by the mint mark 'Mo' (Mexico City), rendered in the characteristically irregular style of cob coinage.
