| Reverse description | Two crowned Pillars of Hercules flank a central crowned royal shield, with the denomination numeral 8 visible to the upper left and the mint assayer letters to the right. The legend PLVS VLTRA, the Spanish royal motto, appears on scrolling banners wrapped around the pillars. The date 1740 is struck in the lower field beneath the pillars. The mint mark L (for Lima) and assayer initial appear to the left of the pillars, consistent with Lima Mint cob coinage of the period. The flan is of irregular shape, typical of the macuqui (cob) striking technique used at colonial mints. |
