Obverse description Central quartered royal arms of Spain within an ornate shield surmounted by an open royal crown; the quarters display the castles of Castile and the lions of León alternating in the traditional arrangement, with additional quartering for Portugal, Aragon, and the Duchy of Burgundy visible in the fully marshalled escutcheon. To the left of the shield appears the Segovia mint mark — the aqueduct — and to the right the denomination numeral 8. The encircling legend reads PHILIPPVS IIII D G in Latin characters, separated by ornamental stops, with the assayer initial visible in the field. The whole is enclosed within a beaded border typical of roller-milled coinage of the period.
