These cob coinage — macuquinas — were struck at the Santa Fe de Bogotá mint during one of the most administratively turbulent periods in New Granada's colonial history. Felipe IV's reign saw repeated complaints to the Council of Indies about debased silver coming out of American mints; a 1649 royal order had demanded stricter assay controls, and the Bogotá mint's subsequent output reflects the attempt at compliance, with fineness holding closer to standard than many contemporaries from Potosí.
The cob format itself was a deliberate production choice prioritizing correct weight over regularity of shape — each piece hand-cut from a cast silver bar and hammer-struck between crude dies.
