Obverse description Central field occupied by the quartered royal shield of Spain bearing alternating castles of Castile and lions of León, with a small inescutcheon of Granada at the base, the whole surmounted by an ornate royal crown. The shield is partially encircled by a beaded border with the assayer mark and denomination numeral VIII visible in the field. A partial circumscribed legend reading PHILIPPVS IIII·D·G runs around the periphery, partially off-flan due to the cob-style striking method. The die work is characteristic of the macuquina (cob) coinage produced at the Santa Fe de Bogotá mint under Philip IV.
