| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the quartered royal arms of Spain within an ornate shield, displaying castles of Castile and lions of León in alternating quarters, with a small oval escutcheon of Granada at the base. The crowned shield is surrounded by a beaded inner circle, with the legend PHILLIPVS·IIII·DEI·G· disposed around the periphery together with the date 1650, the mint mark Mo, and the denomination numeral 8. The die-struck design is characteristic of the milled macuquina (cob) coinage produced at the Mexico City mint under Philip IV, with the legends and devices showing typical irregularity of the hammered technique. |
